1988 Lada Niva

PostPosted: Fri Dec 01, 2006 7:51 am    Post subject: Requiring TLC Reply with quote

Hi Team,

I am a new member and have had some experiance with Niva in the past, having owned five.Currently I own two 1988 models.Only one on the road. Please help with the following.

1,
A five speed gear box which has lost fifth gear. While in motion it will not retain fifth gear and when forced to it will complain. All other gears work fine with typical Niva noises.

2,
Please advise on what brand of shock absorbers are best suited to this vehicle.I have fitted red Koni in the past but now the market is so competitive I am confused.Prior to my ownership it has had some form of amateurish suspension lift.It appears the springs have been swapped for some unknown breed at a wrecking yard. The rear shocks have Mitsubishi Lancer painted on them. The ride is lumpy and thumpy.
I need to start some where so I thought the easiest option being the shocks/dampers.

3,
The electrical demands I plan to put on this machine may be in the order of 140 plus amperes at 13.8 volts.Has anyone done an alternator upgrade with a double pulley conversion on the water pump and crank pulleys so that a commercial grade alternator can be driven?
Any ideas would be grateful.

4,
Because of water and mosture problems due to the rear door hatch rubber seal failing I have gutted all the underfelt and scrapped out all the bituman floor covering. What have others installed to keep the drive train and road noise down? Please do not suggest turning the stereo up louder as it has none fitted.

cheers
Gio,
New Zealand.

If you can get it, the fifth gear cluster can be replaced quite easily without major dismantling (provided there's nothing else wrong with the box). Otherwise, a second hand box?

I use ProComp ES9000 gas shocks - very good. If it's lifted, you need 22" fully extended at rear. Front remains standard length with a 2" lift.

Can't help with a twin pulley installation, but is there no single pulley alternator available, or an alternator that can be converted to single pulley?

Have you any old carpets?

Regards,

Hi Gio...

From your name and that flag waving in your picture I assume you're a transplant from Italy. Benvenuto a l' nostro gruppo, amico...

Try http://www.niva-faq.msk.ru/tehnika/transmis/kpp/perebor/defects.pdf for a very comprehensive troubleshooting guide on gearbox problems. Anyway, I'm about 90% sure that you have a loose output shaft nut which requires immediate attention or you can break a potentially expensive gear cluster...

140 is quite a lot of amps, are you going to use your alternator to do some welding??? Laughing The biggest automotive alty I've seen around comes from Chevy pick-ups, rated at 130 A...

As for the soundproofing, I second Hoodoo's carpet idea.

Thanks for the info team.

I may swap the box out of the spare Niva.

Them ProComp shocks may not be available in this country. But I will keep looking.

Twin pulley alternator less slippage under heavy loads.I plan to run some serious HAM radio gear.Plus later if I add other accessories i.e. twin batteries, winch, working lamps, etc etc it will keep up with the demand.

I now have an old piece of carpet in the the cargo back but need more up front.I have some oil/petrol resistant plastic foam mat to line the floor pan.

Grazie per il benvenuto e le informazioni,Alejoint.
I am first generation Italian/Kiwi

Procomp aren't brought into New Zealand, and wouldn't be worth importing.

Might pay to pop down to supercheap and see how long the rear commodore KYB shocks are.

Stu

Have a spare gearbox if you need one.

A friend of mine used to use Jeep Wrangler rear shocks. Not sure of the length though.

For sound deadening you can purchase rolls of the stuff from car accessory shops and Jaycar has it also. The ones with the high density layers are best, as the density of the product effects the sound transmission.

Here are some links

That's ok. The only reason I asked was because the 1.7i has the ingition pickup on the crank pulley so you might have had trouble fitting a twin pulley.
