Hi,

Could someone please explain how to work out the tyre width and height of a tyre when they provide the dimensions in the form xxxR16.

For example:

Insa Turbos - 205R16

I'd assume the 205 is the width 8.5", but then looking at:

ATACAMA SPORT 750/16

That's 28.2" which must be the height ?

My head hurts!

Most tyres have an aspect ratio this is the middle two numbers in that particular tyres size (ie 205/80R16),there are some that don't (ie 750R16). A 205/80R16 has a diameter of app 736mm, if you divide this sum by 25.4mm it will give you the diameter in inches (app 29 inches.A 750R16 has an app diameter of 814mm divide this by 25.4mm it works out to be app 32 inches. All tyres have there size stamped on them. The only other tyre markings you will see will be (for example)37x15.50R15,this tells you that the tyre is app 37inches in diameter with a read width of app 15.50 inches and that they fit 15 inch diameter wheels.

Just to clarify, they are just old fashion ways of marking tyre size

205r16 are a metric size which should read 205/80r16 ie 205mm wide and 80% of 205mm high.

7.50 are an imperial size which should read 7.50-32r16 ie 7.50" wide and 32" high

I never understand why tyres have to be marked up in such a complicated fashion, why use percentages!

cheers anyhow

Have a play with one of these sites to see what the various sizes mean relative to one another.

Lets see if this helps.A 205/80R16 is 205mm wide with a 80% sidewall profile.A 750R16 is (in theory) 7.5 inches wide with a 100% sidewall profile(in Europe)7.50R16's are getting stamped 7.5/100R16.Pirate4x4.Com is also a good site
