Since the forum has has a facelift I find that the text of posts (and images) run out to the right of my screen causing me to have to scroll about to read everything. How can I get it all to fit within the confines of my 17" screen.

Any post throughout a thread which includes a wide picture or a very long set of characters without any spaces (eg web address) will cause the whole thread to go wide.

If you are seeing this problem on all threads there could be something amiss with your browser. Internet Explorer is more prone to rendering problems because it doesn't always comply with the international standards - Firefox does much better in this respect.

You could try forcing a page refresh by pressing the Ctrl key and F5 together as this will re-render the page ignoring any data in the cache.
Or try Firefox from here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/

I still reckon that is an MS Internet Exploder 6 (sic) problem.

Looking at the HTML code includes this:
Quote:
<table width="100%" cellspacing="2" cellpadding="2" border="0" align="center">
Which suggests that the page should NOT exceed the viewable width. I accept this could be modified by the style sheet or other influences, but fundamentally there is nothing wrong.

Has anyone tried the CTRL+F5 refresh?
Did it make any difference?

OK, I can't argue with others real experiences.

I have seen the problem with IE6, and never with Firefox2 (my default browser which I use 95% of the time). The threads have only gone wide with Firefox when the data is wider than the cell, as described above. It might have something to do with the advertising images?
See attached screen shots... the LR section renders without scrollbars on Firefox at 806 pixels (800 might be OK too), but even at 1096 pixels IE6 still activates the horizontal scrollbar!

I still maintain that IE6 does have some rendering problems - I have had some bad experiences when developing pages which work fine with other browsers but don't render properly IE6. However, I can't immediately give a specific pointer as to which HTML commands are failing.

Further thoughts:
Are you running with default "Medium" text size?
Have you made any changes to "Fonts..." or "Accessibility..." options?

To switch off the automatic spelling checker, go to your "Profile" from the header navigation links;
then click the 'No' radio button next to "Always check Spelling before posting:"

Hi all.

It also happens with IE7.

Hitting F11 sorts it (temporarily).

In IE7 there is a zoom control in the bottom right, just above the task bar on your desktop if you have the window maximized. Click the tiny arrow to get the menu up, click custom and try 96-99 %. Usually does the trick for me. I can't remember where this control is in IE6 but I imagine it would be in the view menu.

The only problem with this is that the smileys you all use will usually then appear over part of the text, as Internet Explorer isn't clever enough to sort that out.

Confirmed, but full screen I'm looking at 1400 pixels so it ought to fit! You can also fix the problem by changing the magnification and then setting it back to 100% (eg CTRL- then CTRL+). But this really just confirms that there is a problem with IE, since sometimes it does render correctly with identical data.

It's not the physical size, it's the number of pixels which helps. Most 19" LCDs are 1280 pixels wide (same as 17" LCDs) which should be enough based on the test I did earlier.

So its not only me then, but something to do with the way this forum has been written in html or the like (My programming skills dont go beyond Sinclair BASIC Smile ).
I dont get this problem with the vast majority of other sites I visit (it did happen for a while with a Skoda site I visit but it sorted it's self- now fine). Maybe this site will get better as well.

Could it be that a no word wrap option has been selected. I agree that it is v annoying and unique to this site. With a laptop the forum is almost unusable and really needs sorting!

As far as I can see (having looked for less than one minute) there are two problems which cause these effects:

1) The layout table for a thread has the "nowrap" option on its data tags. This means long pieces of text without spaces (i.e. urls) will not wrap from one line to the next.
2) The data tags are set to be 100% (correct) but this means long non-wrapping text and large pictures will make the row very wide (hence the effects you see).

Initially I would try limiting the width of pictures to 800 pixels, and removing the no-wrap property from table data tags. Should the latter not be possible with the forum software (it is only PHP so we could edit it ourselves) then you could try restricting the message width to 800 pixels as well.

Hope this makes sense and helps.

Further to my post above, I\you\the royal "we" could write a phpBB mod which ensures the page is formatted correctly.

If the above is tried and does not work, I will look into how hard it would be to code something.

Could be a 'can of worms' which is why I've been keeping my head down regarding volunteering to fix the code.

Phil, it sounds like you have stepped into the breach, with no escape clause! Cool

Well.....P&S have some things to try first. If they don't work, then I will look into some solutions, and how hard they would be to implement.

So why then, when you hit the "zoom" button and come back to 100% does it sort itself out? If the "nowrap" was the problem it would always be the problem and wouldn't be affected by the "zoom" function.

Phil Wilson wrote:

Yes true, but certain people still get the problem when there are NO pictures and NO long non-wrapping text! So it's nothing to do with uploaded graphics or long text.

But this shouldn't be necessary given that phpBB is used by other websites and the problem is not evident there even though they don't have the restrictions you propose.

I'm not certain what the problem is because I can't get at the PHP and general profile to poke about, but I did some "browser side" poking and spoke to Simon about the size of the "Bronco" graphic at the bottom of every page. He carried out some alterations which seemed to improve things marginally for me (page didn't "spill" as far as it did previously) but it was still not right. I suggested removing the graphic purely to prove the point and then put it back pending solving the actual problem once it was proven to be that... or not as the case may be. Shocked

I've installed phpBB too many times now and frequent too many sites using it and I've never seen this problem anywhere else! It's bizarre and I just wish I could help more.

Well the "zoom" fix is not universal. On my laptop I can zoom in and out, go to fullscreen and back with no joy. I have also used IE, Opera or Firefox on 6 different machines running Windows, Linux and Solaris.....and it only worked on two occasions.

What did stay the same, however, was that when there were large pictures or long URLs the screen was very wide.

I see the changes have started, long urls are trimmed with ellipses in the middle. What else is new? This S&P or down to you Phil?

Further to my points above though, I just adblocked the big images from the CoolantSensor thread....and it no longer cause the wide screen problem.

Therefore wide images do cause the problem. Although I am not suggesting they are the only cause. Limiting the width of images, along with the wrapping URLs, IMO, would help towards sorting the problem.

I've just visited the forum for the first time in a little while and the first thing I noticed was the really annoying situation with the width of the forum, which necessitates horizontal scrolling. As the others have said, the 'old' forum didn't do this, so there must be something different about this one.

I did presume it was something in the code that forces the page to a specific width, rather than to 100% of the screen width, but when I logged in the problem seemed to disappear. Then it came back again!

I've just been back out to the main topic page, which was okay with its width after I logged in, but when I refreshed the page it had the annoying horizontal scroll bar back again!

Having played about with resizing the browser window it will re-size the forum page until it gets to the end of someones line of text, at which point it won't word wrap, instead adding a horizontal scroll bar. Really annoying!
