Ok, I'm getting a bit fed up with my Discovery getting grounded out.
I'm running a standard height Disco with a set of 205R16 Macho's.
Question 1: What is the tallest tyre (mud) I can fit without any mods?
Question 2: If I fit 1 inch spacers on my springs, what could I fit then?
I have no problems with cutting the arches to get them to fit! I'm just fed up with getting stuck!

Answer 1: Not much bigger than you have now,you could go to 225/75R16 but that's only 10mm or so bigger than you have now.
Answer 2: It sounds like you want to fit 235/85R16's to me which are 80mm or so larger than your current fitment, i have heard of them going on standard ride height Discovery's but in most cases i have heard of, be prepared to lift it a couple of inches, do a camel cut (the rear arches),trim the end of the front bumpers, and possibly increase the bump stop heights.I know of a extremely well prepared (off road) Discovery that when it was first used off road (without a camel cut and lift) it destroyed the bottom of the rear wings when the 235/70R16 tyres caught them.

I run 265/70 ATs with a cut to the rear arches, and the front spoiler. Gives it a bit of lift, but still drives OK.
Taper cut at the rear, but, fold in the lip inside the arch.
Pete.

235/80/16 and 265/75/16 fit with 2" lift and carefull trimming.
I had 285/75/16 with 2" lift and arch trimming worked fine.
I also have spacers and offset wheels but 235/80/16 works with out them.Just.

I too am looking at bigger tyres for my Disco, but finances are such that tyres were probably going to come before a lift - but the more I read the more it looks as if the two will have to be done hand in hand.
I don't mind some trimming either - although I don't really want to start removing metal around the tops of the arches - just a camel cut, but neither do I want to loose too much steering lock by simply adjusting the bump stops.
If you change the offset, how much is there to play with before needed to get arch extensions as well - and how much of an increase (typically) is needed?
I know nothing about changing offset - I've seen threads talk of 30mm spacers etc, but what about achieving the same through different wheel fitments -

I have 30mm spacers and 25mm ofset on my wheels giving me a total of 55mm.
It allows my 285/75/16 tyres to fit with out to much trouble,I have fitted DII arches to my 300tdi disco and they just cover the tyres.
I have cut my arches right back so they are slightly bogger than teh DII arches and the DII arch just fits.I started off with just a 2" lift and it worked well, but i have gotten greedy for numbers and gone up to 4" lift.
Removing metal around the top of the arches isnt to bad but you have to rethink about the inner arch which is needed if you want to stop all that poo getting shuved up in the door shuts. They also help prevent you splitting the wheel arch apart when going through deep water especialy if you like to go a little to fast.
I tried just removing a little of teh wing at the rear of the rear arches and a little of the front wings but it was no good with 265/75/16's they kept catching.I started to trim till they no longer touched and ended up removing about 2" all the way round folowing the upper curve of the arch blister,as you will see below.Still looks neat but wasnt enough.
.
Andy and Grommit learnt the hard way about that as he eneded up looking like an airplane a few years back.

Cheers for the pic in the reply Wavey - looks good!
I must confess to having looked at the details you've put about Roobarb in the garage section a couple of times
Is the 1.4 transfer box necessary 'cos of your wheel & tyre combo - if so is it a TDi ( I'm runnig a V8 ) thing only - or is it just a personal preference thing?

The 1:4 box helps a lot with things like hill starts.
When i had the 265's i had the stock box but it was a little high.
Then i blew my t-box so i fitted teh 1:4.Which helped a lot.Now i have the 285's its still a little high thinking of a 1:6 now.
But it would def not be possable to run a stock T-Box now just too high its a big step from 28" tyres to 34" tyres.
Be warned tho it dose not effect your low box, which is something im working on
