|
|
|
i have been using used filtered veg oil for a few months now, previously i was using svo, i just filled her up on sunday and now my engine is running realy rough, when i try to floor it she cuts out but idles alright appart from the blue clouds of smoke, i looked in fuel filter today and its full of solid white goo and the insides of the tank walls are covered in it too, i think sundays veg has reacted with my diesel, i changed my fuel lines and i no i need to get a new filter but whats the crack with cleaning out the tank? i have about 30 litres of 50/50 mix is there anyway i can add something to fuel to dixolve it or do i cane to empty tank and rince with unleaded or something?
cheers!

Sounds like SPAM in the oil that has solidified. If you could heat it and it may re-liquefy but probably best to flush it out but petrol is a solvent and will knacker the injectors. Sorry, don't know what to do but someone will be on soon who does and who know how to separate the SPAM before it gets in your tank.

It sounds like the whites are fats that have solidified because of the cold weather.
When filtering you allow it stand before hand and they drop down - looks like it may have been filtered when warmer and now they have dropped out in the tank and fuel system.
If you can get it going on diesel and get the fuel running through it should heat up - friction of injector pump etc. This should then melt them and clear the system

i always leave my oil for about 2 weeks standing in the yard and i only filter the top oil and chuck away the fats. i have been using millers diesel pluss for about 6 months now, i have heard people say it has give them problems with veg but it hasnt happened to me before, i thought my filter techniques wer just better.
i filter all my oil cold and i do a 25 micron bag and then a 5 micron bag.

Hello, lets start at the begining, firstly the diaphram in your lift pump is knackered.
If you fit a flat plate heat exchanger in your fuel system the injector spill return will heat the fuel tank and melt the tallow in your tank.
Run really low amounts of veg until the tank heats sufficently and clears it. Water in your diesel will emulsify with veg and turn to mayonnaise giving the condition you describe.
It will run on the injection pump but not rev or drive far.
hope this helps.

I would add 5-10% unleaded to your next tnak of fuel, this should make any gelled SPAM liquid and allow you to clear it.
A tank of bio diesel does a good job of cleaning too.

Just go for a drive, trust me, it'll mix itself!
Ever tried to drive with an open bucket of water in your car without spilling any?

Fitting another lift pump will cure the problem initially, but in time youll kill it too. ( ask me how i know this ) You really need to close the fuel return loop and fit a heat exchanger to make a proper neat job. The unleaded wll alos clean er out but may burn the glow plugs badly and in time will wreck your injectors ..
but like cocaine, occasional use is fine.
seriously though when you get the lift pump out put your finger over the lift inlet and pump it , it shouldnt suck......
a larger diameter fuel line to the tank is also a useful addition to a single tank setup. 10 0r even 12mm ID.
good luck let us know how you got on.

right i decided im going to get one of those fancy fuel filter housings with the heat exchanger built in, what kind of cars have them i remember seing a post about someone getting one from a peugeot or something. im not in the mood for paying £80 for one being sold as a specialist item.
nat dont u have one in your truck?
and whare to i loop the fuel return into? just into the fuel pipe inlet borere the lift pump?

This looks like it'll heat better than mine (more surface area)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Coolant-Heated-Fuel-Filte...dZ1QQcmdZViewItem
however mine if off an OLD Renault Clio 1.9D (Lucas fuel pump)
Mine gets nice and hot but I don't think it transfers HUGE amounts of heat to the filter element.
A flat plate heat exchnager from www.biotuning.co.uk is a VERY good investment at £47 - they help MPG quite a bit.

well off to scrappy tomorrow to rade an old filter housing, and my mates brother is a combi boiler engineer and he's gona see what he can do for plate heat exchangers as he says combi's usualy have them fitted to heat the tap water and they have threaded fittings so id prob be able to get adapters for the water and fuel pipes.
jus need my lift pumper now.

right, been out today and fitted a new lift pump, old one seemed to work okay when i took it out but i guess the new oone wont do any harm, then i put in 2 litres of unleaded into the fuel tank, i got a mate to hold a blow torch next to the fuel filter and away we went, engine runs and idles as it did before and everything was still a bit touch and go when i put the throttle down but i drove round the block a few times and after nearly breaking down a few times it seems alright, i supose there could still be some lard in the fuel filter and banjo fittings on the filter housing but maybe the petrol will loosen it over night.

i bet you did. ................................
it will need to really warm up to clean a clogged IP. the injectors are probably coked up too. a good long run will sort it now.

i have noticed that some veg oil will separate and partly solidify if left outside in sub zero temps .
some of the oil sold by macro does this , i dont know if it is reconstituted cooking oil , ie remanufactured .
ive only had one 20 litre drum of it to try but after leaving it outside in the recent cold spell i noticed the oil had partly solidified .
normal new rapeseed cooking oil doesnt seem to do the same thing and so i am assuming its only used oil or remanufactured oil that will pose this problem .
once temp is above freezing then this problem doesnt seem to occur .
the old 2.5 N/A diesels had a fuel heater fitted to some of them which fixed/sandwiched to the fuel filter and housing .
it was a landrover supplied addition .
i have a 1986 90 landy which has one fitted and it comes on when temps are very cold .
there is a red light in middle of the dash just above the rear wash wipe switch area and when i bought the landy years ago i allways wondered what it was until someone pointed it out to me .
the vehicle was owned by a welsh council and used in the welsh mountains .
there are some very cheap in line fuel heaters for sale on ebay which you might be able to fit and just switch on when engine is cold .
you can clean the fuel lines out by using compressed air and blowing them back through to tank from the injector pump end if you remove the pipe union from the pump end and blow through .
you can also use a paraffin washer gun and blow normal diesel back through the fuel line and into the tank .
i regularly put some unleaded petrol in my tank as an addition , to keep injectors cleaned , although i only put about half pint of unleaded into a full tank .
you may want to reduce your svo/diesel mix ratio in colder weather if you are having problems with the oil "waxing " up .
i am wondering if one of those drinks can foam type insulators might help you at all, place one over the fuel filter perhaps .
weather will warm up in a few weeks though and your problems will be gone
