We saw quite a few 4x4 Sprinters in Iceland - nice but not as cool as the 4x4 Merc 308 I saw! Lots of unusual 4x4 vans - VW LTs, Merc 508s, 608s, Ivecos and of course the wonderful 4x4 Scania and Volvo buses!

Did you check the scrapyard in Egglistadir - fantastic 4x4 graveyard!

There is a company in Wales (TRS Vehicles?) who sometimes have them for sale, so a utility company must use them.

We have them at work. I think some go through burnley auction plant sale.

I'm not sure they're a proper 4x4 - some bloke said it was a part time thing with a viscous coupling. don't take that as definitive.

Most of them have a locking rear diff.

However if you're planning on going "Properly" Offroad, and not just on gravel roads etc then find the one with the low box because the clutches don't like offroad abuse!

Iveco make a nice new 4x4 cabin chassis on the Daily platform that looks like an excellent start for an overland camper as well ! Powered by a 3l common rail diesel with loads of horsepowers and torks.
