Hi, I'm considering looking at a G wagon for sale near me, it's a 1989, 280, SWB with about 150,000 miles, and from a couple of pictures I've seen it has a few rust patches and a bit of a dent in the front wing.

The owner says it runs okay and it has tax and Mot for a couple of months.

If I was to look at it what should I look out for that is G wagon specific.

Are parts readily available and reasonably cheap? Is the 4 wheel drive system a part time off-road only or will it be permanent?

(This would be used for off-roading and as a 'truck' not a family car Wink )

Ask questions here mate www.gwoa.co.uk. However. PArts are easy to get hold of, the 280 engine is a old fashioned motor but great, average about 15MPG with autobox. the valve guide seals can be an issue, take it for a resonable run and on overrun see if smoke appears at rear, its not a knackered engine, just valve guide seals. If its auto, change the oil as a matter of course. If there is a vibration between 40 to 60 . this will be steering dampers (£75). it will rust round rear light clusters and sometimes under front screen rubber. Check for front damp carpets, water ingress can come from wiper spindles. But for the right price mate there very strong and relaible. also pull up diff lick levers to make sure the lockers work, if not, the new seals in the slave cylinders. again not an issue. By the way, the chassis wont rust Wink

the 460 Is part time fwd with front and rear lockers. you can slip it into 4wd at any speed Shocked great if towing and its wet and you have 3.5 t trailer on the back to help with braking. anything else you need to know just post, take it for a spin, check the temp gauge too. rads sometimes need a re-core, (£100) but dont be surprised if the the temp gauge dont hardly get hot. these engines are form the 123 seris merc saloons so loads around. Axles ! just change the oil, check wheel bearings but really not a lot else to worry about. Ok parts are as cheap as a LR but you will not need to replace much
