Evenings.
As MOT time is looming (4 months) i am thinking about how to lower the smoke levels, and some people say running SVO in the diesel.

I know the 300 is capable of this, but what are the pitfalls (ie filters etc) and what mix ratio would peopel reccomend. At this stage i'm not doing this to save money, just to save me MOT grief. Will it actually work, or will it increase the black stuff if it doesnt burn properly?

Any help or advice on this will be welcomed warmly.

Cheers
Tim

Your pitfalls are...

It will be hard to start this time of year.
And run lumpy and smokey until its been warmed up a bit.
Long term you may gum up your piston rings.

Really you do want a heat exchanger on a TDI, evenif you leave one idling on veg you can do damage - you want to be putting hot veg into a hot injector pump.

But yes, it will stop it smoking as much...

My fourtrak used to billow clouds of fumes - you know what you can see in the lights of the car behind you at night when you floor it?

Well on Veg its virtually non existant.

Also take the air filter out for the test.

My MOT is in April, so hopefully it will be a bit warmer. Would a 75% diesel 25% SVO be any use in the tank before the MOT?

Put it this way, i am high 2.somethings and low 3.thingies on the emissions test, so it only needs to come down a bit.

Instead of risking using SVO in your direct injection engine without a twin tank system, and running the risks as mentioned by Nat, why not run it on biodiesel before your MOT.
It definitely lowers your emissions; my ML270 runs on 100% and had it's mot in November, the emission average was 0.33!
