Well it needs not to have any particles in there, nor any water.
It'll need to be kept inside because they tend to suck in water if its left standing on the top.
a good swill with a few litres of petrol should get it fairly clean, whats it held before?

The drum held engine oil so didn't think it would matter too much if there were small traces in it. Thought a swill with petrol will do the trick. Would like to put a tap in the bottom but with a fixed lid it may be a pain to get the swarf out. Actually I just thought a magnet on a stick pushed through the hole in the top would help get swarf out. May just cut the top off anyway and fit the tap and a clear tube up the side for a sight gauge. Not having any luck finding one with a clip on lid.

I do not suggest you cut a hole in the sides of the drum so you can fit a sight glass.
The drum 200l (45 gall) drum is 600 mm diameter, and you will find it impossible to get a tank fitting to seal against the curved side.
Trust me.
Also, instead of cutting the top off your drum, simply get one that has the removable lid.
Typically the removable lid is 400mm diameter.
I use a 25mm pipe from a pump, which is set at floor level, this go's to the bottom of my 200L drum.
From the pump, I pump into a 20 inch sediment filter, they are called "BIG BLUE" to these housings you can fit filter cartridges from 1micron to whatever they go up to.
Exiting the filter i simply pump back into the 200L drum, with a " T " off, with a 1/2 inch hose for filling.
The pump is run, and the pump delivers aprox 300gall per hour through the filter.
I have a 2 micron filter in my housing.
Providing the oil is strained to get out the worst of the crud, then my filter lasts 12 months.
I have not had to replace my filter on my vehicle in over 2 years.

Hi,
I did want to use a clip top barrel but having difficulty finding one. Any suggestions as to what sort of company may have one spare ?? I have a contact for smaller blue plastics ones and they will be available sometime in January. Planned on using one of those to prefilter the crud out.

Hi there,
I was sent out to Stockport, to a company called nazdar.
http://www.findtheneedle.co.uk/companies/107022-nazdar-limited.asp
They are a water based ink printers.
I got mine from there just for the asking. 200Liter clip top lids. PVC, very strong.
They pay to get rid of them.
This was about 4 months ago.
If I am planned to go back there, or just close, I could drop by and collect one for you if you wanted ?
As it was just water base ink, it easily washed out with some hot ordinary water.
