Hi all.
Having had a good look around the net for the last few days, I have come to the conclusion that there isn't that much information out there about performing this mod.
I found a few things, such as the link below which can be used as a reference for those wanting to do this.
http://www.landyworld.co.uk/diydiscosnorkel.html
Has anyone on the forum done a mod like this, if so, some knowledge and pics would be great.
I'm gonna have a crack at making a good one, professional looking, watertight, and as cheap as i can keep it. Anybody want to pool ideas/problems?
So join up for "Project Drainpipe"
The first rule of project drainpipe is you dont talk about project drainpipe..
The second rule........

Hmm ill be watching this with interest as i am thinking of doing the same to my 110.
I was planning running the snorkel through the wing top vent on the drivers side to avoid cutting holes in the bodywork.
Tom.

Hi
I made one for my 200 tdi Disco. Principle would be the same for 300. I used 70mm aluminium rainwater downpipe, some marley plastic drain pipe of the same size (bought in Germany I should add, not common size over here), a pattern 90 degree radiator hose from Gates (£13) with 30cm straights, and half a dozen jubilee clips. I fabricated a top from sheet steel in the form of a Mantec top. No pics I am afraid of that. Photos of the instalation will follow when I get them on Photo bucket

Thanks for the info and pics guys, top job.
I'm very impressed with the between inner and outer wing idea farmer, very cool and streamlined. Outer wings just bolted on? i dunno.
I'm wondering how i can incorporate a snorkel with a K&N filter also, the radial ones. Get rid of the current air box and fab something similar to run in its place maybe. A run up the M6 today has told me that 245/70 bfg's means a lot for the engine to turn uphill between 65 - 80mph. Struggled on hills i used to fly up. Hence the K&N.

Nice looking snorkel. I've designed one for my Range Rover but still need a top. Anyone know where to get the mushroom type top?

MATT SAVAGE sells the mushroom tops on ebay for £15.95 (clicky link)
interestingly they are £5 cheaper in his ebay store than his own website

Solid steel pipe in inner wing, to top of screen, then a mushroom top.
The only flexi piece is from the filter, through the inner wing to the bottom of the steel pipe. (about eight inches in total).
Steel pipe, angle grinder, welder and maybe an hour and a half.
Doesn't stick out at side of vehicle, won't crack if you hit a tree branch, looks at least as neat as one costing an arm and a leg.
Total cost, about twenty quid.
Propper job.

DIY it, you know its the way
Hi all, new to these forums. Only had a nosey becuase I noticed I was getting traffic to my disco snorkel page (not my job, done by a mud club member skibum).
If anyone has any pics of the install of their DIY snorkels of any model I would love to stick some more pages up! Email me the pics and info for project drainpipe, I will happily put it up to help others with their projects!
Its a real shame, I have spent soo much time trying to get mine through an MOT that I havent fitted or modified anything for fun in ages!
Bloody land rovers eh, you just have to love em!

Latest update.
Project Drainpipe has been on hold for a while now, but with a spare few hours I had a good look at the problem. Posted some pics below and tried to explain what I think I need to do next.
Start by removing the outer wing. Phillips screws along the top and 10mm bolts accessed by opening the door.
There's another Phillips screw located at the front of the wing almost behind the bumper.
And a really sneaky one at the bottom which I missed and it snapped a piece off my wing. Only small and you cant see it so no problem!
Also undo the bolt that retains the trim under the windscreen. Do this before you start to pull the outer wing away from the inner. Gently lift the trim away from the top of the wing, there is a raised bit you cant see that will catch the trim and crack it (Like mine) if you don't.
Now you need to pull the outer away, separating the faces helps as they're covered in sticky stuff. There are 3 retaining brackets with fasteners going thru the plastic inner mud guard. I struggled with these and ended up just forcing them thru the plastic.
With the wing off I can now see where the air intake is (Towards front), and also a circle in the centre which could be cut away.
Because this a 300tdi the air box intake is at the front rather than the side as on a 200tdi.
So, my options as I see them are to source a 200 style air box and go thru the circular area on the inner wing or to use a flexible hose to go to the front intake hole. The problem is the strengthening box section of the inner wing. I would need to cross this from bottom to top in order to get back on line for my exit thru the outer wing and I'm not sure i have the space, especially if I want to use large bore pipes.
Any suggestions or comments?
Stu.

First off I'd like to thank everyone who has contributed to this thread/project and all those who've pm'd info etc.
It's been a good project, really enjoyed it.
So, update:
Got a 200Tdi airbox off eblag = £8 inc p&p
Got a pre cleaner top from a local place for less than £10.
Spent about £10 at B&Q on drainpipe and bends.
Started by running my pipe down the pillar, chamfered the end end then scored around it on the outer wing.
Masking tape on, jigsaw around the shape and clean up with a file.
When your happy with the hole and the downpipe enters easily enough (4 cuts later...) then chop out the hole for in the inner wing. I had a 90mm hole saw, they're about £15 in B&Q
Now you have your main holes you can mock up the snorkle to see if/where it fits together. Add a bracket here and there to support/fasten the tubes down.
One of the major issues for me was routing the intake pipe from the manifold to the airbox. I came up with a system that used some drainpipe, some of the 200Tdi bits that came in the box and and plenty of pipe cement and clear silicon.
The pipe from the airbox to the inner wing pipe had to be built up with snoopy loops. These are innertube rings, its a diving term. I used 3 and sandwiched each one with a healthy bit of silicon.
When your happy that everything is as good as its gonna get and air/watertight its time to fix it all together and chuck the wing back on.
I tested each part of the circuit before i fitted it by closing off an end and trying to suck air through - I know its sound.
The airbox has been sealed with silicon and will have the drain valve blanked as soon as I find the WD40 cap I pinched in aldi the other day, maybe they nicked it back...
Short (5/6cm) pieces of pipe were used to bring the outside diameter of the bends up to where they needed to be in most cases. Quite lucky really, a bit of filing and the odd slot cut to allow a bit of compression and everything fits together without to much difficulty.
So, here's the finished article:
A piece of door seal from an escort van finishes off the wing, the scrapper charged me a whole quid for that
So, what are you waiting for, a snorkel for thirty notes!!!!!
Stu.

have done mine now
this was completly free!!!
Snorkel pipe and sealant was in a skip (drain pipe)
The flexi hose was already on the car
The top the consists of a butter tub and k&n filter that was in the bin at dads work.
Have now made it neater by cutting up the original vent and painting it.
