Have a little question. I'm running 10liters of veg with 25l diesel but I've read that adding petrol is good to thin it.
I have a 2.5TD 90 with a 35L tank, what ratios would any one recommend for the Petrol/Diesel/Veg.
Also is there any problems with putting petrol in?

Err, what make the fuel pump on the 2.5TD?
Is it a Lucas or a Bosch?
If its a Lucas then STOP using veg immediately. it will kill your injection pump!

I'm running 70/30 mix at the moment and everything is working fine but ild like to try 60/40 and was wondering about adding petrol to help thin it for the winter.

I tried veg. oil in my 200 tdi disco a fortnight ago. I put 10 litres of diesel in along with two litres of veg. oil and all I can say is that the disco didn't like it! she was missing and down on power. As soon as I went back to pure diesel everything was running ok again. A mate of mine reckons he's running a berlingo van on 50/50 with no change but I honestly can't see how. For the small saving in price I dont think it's worth the risk.

i have been doing wvo for months now, and i mix 10% petrol with the filtered wvo and pour it strate into the tank, just 10% petrol halfes the viscosity of the oil.

Yes, Mixing in petrol is fine - however it does lower the oils cetane rating so you may notice a lack of power.
You can buy a cetane booster to bring this back up (called VeggiBoost)
As saitan_jnr says 10% RUG lowers the viscosity of veg by 50%
You're fairly safe with an indirect injection engine, however running veg in a direct injection engine without conversion is a bit risky due to the risks of ring gumming.
I converted my fourtrak to a twin tank system, cost a measly £130 and I can run 100% veg oil.

Interesting....
I have bought a diesel engine specifically for doing this.
What would you use to filter used veg oil? Or do you lot use fresh/clean oil?
I'll be running a GMC V8 without turbo, I was thinking an older engine would cope with it better?? Also would it mess up a turbo if I were to get one?
thanks,
Naomi

Hi Naomi, Interesting choice of engine, however a big hurdle for you in using that engine is it uses a Stanadyne injection pump, this has the same weakness as the Lucas pumps.
If you feed it cold veg it will Seize up.
It needs a proper twin tank conversion with a temperature sensor to monitor the temp of the fuel LEAVING the pump...
Have a look for my filter system on this section of difflock for ideas.

Thanks Nat, I assumed this would be the case as I knew it obviously wouldn't be a bosh. I have been looking at your filtering set up and twin tank thread (very good thread), and that is what I am planning
It sounds like a lot of work, but it will be well worth it in the end! Hopefully the saving in fuel will also make up for the price I am going to have to pay for my insurance too!!! lol

James.
Which engine is in your Landy?
Is it the 200/300tdi or the 19J 2.5TD???

the 2.5TD 19J engine has a Lucas Injection pump.
Beware these WILL seize if fed cold veggy, its not a question of it might... It will.
And they stop with no warning...

OK, thanks for the warning. could have been a fairly un happy me if i stopped in the next 2 weeks.
Is it ok if i still put 10 liters in with 25L of diesel or would you not really recommend it.
My situation is i go away skiing from the 24th of December till 16th or later of April. So when i get back after then i am planning on putting a 200tdi in. So i don't know, will it be ok for the next 2 weeks or should i stay clear.

By the time you pay for the "Veggieboost" how do the costs compare?

Is it ok to use bio-diesel with a Lucas fuel pump?

I would substitute 5l of diesel for 5l of unleaded to help thin it, much better idea.
Steve, I haven't worked out the costs of adding Veggi Boost, its 50ml per litre of fuel I THINK.
Yes, Properly made (and winterised at this time of year) bio should be fine.

My 300 Tdi ran happily on 90% veg oil in the summer but as things got cold it was sluggish to start and lost umph. Much quieter though.

And bear in mind if the pump siezes, it will more than likely throw the timing belt off, leaving you with a repair bill for more than just the pump!
