I know you don't have to pay tax now on the first 2500ltrs so keeping a talley of oil used is a good idea but do you have to register with customs and excise prior to using veg oil.

Correct, you do not need to register with HMRC (No longer called customs and excise).
You would need to register if you believe that you are likely to use more that 2500 litres in that year.

As long as you don't go over 2500 litres a year then you have no problem.

Are the engines in the vehicles suitable for veg?

if you're running common rail stuff then it won't cope with veg.

Have you considered making BIO diesel?

thanks nat.

i was thinking of just buying in bio... or diluting tinned cooking oil... whats the law on storing the stuff? we have a 1 ton transit tank with red in atm but apparently you need a bund now and we dont have the space.
there's 2 mk 2 transits, one brand new transit, one 2.8 trooper but my car is the 1.9 wv tdi pd engine which might complain.
either way, we use more than 2.5tons of fuel a year so it'll be getting used alongside the forecourt stuff.

I'm not sure on the law of storing veg.. I don't think there is one..
Possibly Bunded tanks...
No limit on storing diesel.

The old transits with the "Banana" Engine will run on it just fine but will be a real pig to start from cold.

The new transit and the VW PD engine - Don't even bother with veg, you WILL kill them, Properly made Bio only.
Trooper should be fine.

I would setup for making Bio.

a steady supply of Waste veg from the local burger fry and you could make 2500l of Bio without paying duty, coming to 15ppl MAX you're gonna make quite a saving,

Failing that run your whole fuel needs on BIO and just declare the duty...

thanks nat, it all seems like alot of effort to make the stuff considering work is quite busy anyway but if we can save 30ppl by buying it in i'll be happy.
trying to find somewhere that sells it now, no-one here seems too interested.

As I understand it (correct me if I'm wrong) the limit on usage is, as mentioned above 2500ltrs, this is the total fuel usage, not the percentage of veg oil. Mixing with diesel constitutes producing biofuel.

So....... if you mix 50/50 your total usage is double.
