what a donkey!

me l mean,
l have been scouring ebay and the Internet in general for the last couple of weeks or so looking for bigger or agric tyres for my unimog with out success and then yesterday l had to go up to the barn to dig something out from the back, this involved moving the spare wheels and tyres for my zils, l looked at the size on the side wall and low and behold they were 20" dia, wrong stud patten but at least the tyres would fit if l changed them over, and whats more there are 4 of them and they are as new
but they are 1200 x 20 doesn't sound much of a difference from 10.5 x 20
but its one hell of a difference when you look at them side by side
do you think this is going to be too much of an increase, will it kill the gearing ? bearing in mind l should have more available power with the 300 tdi engine, and if as l have read on here you set off in third l will have 2 lower gears to use to combat the taller gearing ?
might have to try these just for the hell of it

Wait and see how many people ask if you want to get rid of them, that should tell you if to use them or not Cool

Before you have too many thoughts about it here's one.You will need different rims for them.Your Unimog rims are one piece rims your zil rims are three piece rims, this is because the tyre bead is a different design on truck tyres compared to agricultrial tyres. You can get three piece unimog rims, it's the rims they fit on the ag ones before they fit traction pattern tyres (it saves wearing them out), but has been posted above i think as well that the 12.00-20's are too big, what you need to do is to put a 10.5-20, a 12.5-20 and a 12.00-20 next to each other to see the difference.

hi
shaggy/ mr tyre

l think you are right, its to big an increase, its going to be too much and kill the gearing, its just that they are there doing nothing and would have been nice to use them up, but as you have already tried some big tyres and found them worse than stock l will take your advice and not use them,
well l cant not on my rims if mr tyre is right and l am sure he is
so its back to looking for some agri type tyres,
any ideas mr trye ?
some thing like the pic below but perhaps not quite so big ?

The equivalent to 10.5-20 is 275/80-20.The equivalent to 12.5-20 is 335/80-20.For 275/80's you will need 8 or 9 inch rims. For 335/80's you will need 9 or 11 inch rims.

thanks minimog

they got loads of choice on there,

mr tyre
what does 1250, 80,18 mean
is the 1250 the dia in mm ? in which case its quite a jump from the original 10.50's and what is the 80 bit the width ?
the last bit is the rim dia l assume, usually 20 for a mog, but when l was in the commercial breakers last week looking at hyd pumps they had a pair of dumper axles with 18" wheels on that looked like the right stud patten,
nice deep dish and they were only talking a tenner a piece

how do l decipher the speed rating, in fact what speed rating do l want
the mog is not registered for road use at present and if l do register it it will probably be agricultural
http://www.agrityresdirect.co.uk/index.php?pg=viewitem&id=328
is the type of thing l am looking at

12.5/80-18. 12.5 is the tread width, 80 is the sidewall height (as in 80 is 80% of the tread width) for 18 inch wheels. You really need G rated tyres for a Unimog,G rating is good for app 56 mph). Most dumper tyres will be B rated, this means the tyres are good for app 31 mph.If the tyres are marked 275/80-18 thats the equivalent of 10.5-18, if they are marked 335/80-18 thats the equivalent of 12.5-18.

I don't know Mogs but I do know a guy who runs 12.5-20's on 9" 404 rims on his 101. I used to run 10.5r20's on mine which is about as big as you can go with out some surgery Wink So if a 101 can handle it, surley a mog can. Though fiting them without spilt rims may be traumatic.

well l have just been back to the breakers up the road and the 18" wheels and tyres of the the dumper have been sold at £50 for the 4
****** should have had them while l had the chance, still you live and learn
climbing chris
l am tempted to try the 1200x 20's but if they don't fit the rims then that's that, but its still likely that the mog might find them too big
as it doesn't have a low box in the normal sense as a 101 does, and isn't blessed with that nice V8 (yet) with all that torque straight from tick over

l use to have a 101 fitted with a 4.6 and zf auto box, it would climb a mountain, but unless you you were a midget it was difficult to get in it let alone drive it

minimog
they look nice deep dish wheels, l cant believe how short that mog is, that must be scary driving off road with out a roll cage, l would be constantly thinking about a roll over
are you still pursuing that gear box idea, is the box the same as a 404 box
do you want some help with it? l have access to a big milling machine to get it flat ready to weld a front plate on it

the minimog wheels are the standard 9x18" tube wheels(could do with a bit more offset for sideways stability because its also narrower than the 404)
thanks for the offer of help but at the moment its been put on a backburner till the other mog has had the mods done to it
as for the 12x20 dave moggs has agric tyres on his standard rims the do suffer a bit if you want to keep the hispeed but it doesnt seem to affect him offroad
you can also mod the original 6 speed box into a 2x4 configeration because on the mog theres a big jump from second to third the new mod you have 4 low gears and four slightly diferent road gears

If you want to know the reserve, bid £10,000 then retract your bid stating "entererd wrong amount" then bid £100 to make it look legit.

Against the spirit and rules of E-bay, stuff em. Wink

Or just ask the seller.

Hi minimog, do you have any details on this upgrade? ratio's for hi and low? what happens with the reverse gears ? still 2 with the upgrade? Is this a home conversion or from a supplier?
btw love your little mog , I had a diesel 401 with pto driven twin drum logging winch on the back about 18 yr ago , big mistake selling that Crying or Very sad
Still I'm going to have some fun with my 404 projects i think .

cheers

Howdy,

That guide deserves credit to the author Bernardo Westphal over on mog mail - you can see his thread on the mirror here - http://www.mogmsgexch.com/viewtopic.php?t=37026&start=0

and download a PDF here

http://www.robanddenise.com/webpics/tranny.pdf

Gonna give it a go?

that the one its a very good write up on how to do it Wink "thanks Bernardo"
so are you going to do it jim ive started mine on the spare shiftplate and top cover
i think me and dave have worked out a way to keep the pto and the linkage in the top cover (but you have to machine a new cut out for the new pto lever)

It's somewhere on the end of a very long list. It certainly won't lock out reverse on the two new gears - that's a ridiculous idea, it's far too slow backwards.

I want to do a J turn!

you can hav all eight gears in reverce if you leave the selector stop of the first/second link but thats just asking for trouble (just got up to 20mph and whoops pulled wrong lever into reverce) Crying or Very sad

Reading the thread about bigger wheels and tyres? My Mog came on 12 x 20 Bar grips I think ex Bedford RL?.
They look great but really lift the gearing to the point where i have to use 3rd on steep road hills. You can pull top on A roads (65 bhp Ford Diesel) but it feels really over geared.
I now have 10.5 x 20 and it is far more civilized.
If anyone has got the power to use them, I have a set of 5 Mog wheels with usable tread 12 x 20 Bar grips with centre angle cut out ( spare has scuffed side walls) which I would be happy to swap for 10.5 x20 road tyres on Mog wheels?
