|

|
I want to mount a CB Ariel on the standard bars that come with the jimny. I can't find any mounts that would work.
My idea was to mount at the rear on the bar, and make a hole into the cap for the wire underneath. Hopefully there will be a way to take the wire into the body work and down the top of the car within the trim.
I don't wanna cut into the body, and wondering if anyone see any mounts that would work? All the ones i see are door clamps / body / mirror.
Gonna sell that CB i got which should get me around 200 quid and get a maycom em-27.
There just enough space under the center dash to bolt a CB on.

The Jimny roof bars are plastic, so not ideal. You could earth it, but think you would find it hard to get good performance.

i have one of these (picture below) which i got from here www.4x4cb.com. See http://www.4x4cb.com/public/menu.cfm?Category=457 for mounts. They also do something called a virtual earth which is supposed to remove the need to actually earth the aerial but i've never tried one.

The caps at end are plastic and the bar is metal. The wires as i said would go in as one of the caps and i can easily earth the aerial in the side somewhere whilst i travel bk to the dashboard through the door frame.

Last resort, as it's not permanent.

Fitting an Arial in the way you describe is not a problem if you only want to receive, but to transmit this then becomes an antenna and realy needs to be a ballanced system, lf earthed against a metal " ground plane" and is a big enough area this is OK ,
What is required is a "counterpoise" inthis case a 9ft 6in length of wire connedted to the braid [ overlong] and trimmed back untill lowwest SWR at center frquency,
Even this may not work if the impedence is not near 50 ohm . ldealy you should check with a dummy load at connection end for 1to1 , l dont doubt the rig will work ok but the finals will take some pain , Good luck with your CB + hope this is of some help . GAWXO..
PS Damien did you come to my off road site in summer with Mike H ??.

Damien,
I got a lorry mirror mount from a truck stop and fitted mini exhaust clamps in place of the supplied U-bolts. They bite nicely into the aluminium roof rails. Once mounted check for earth continuity with a multi meter on micro ohms range to the body work (the door catches are a good place to check to). I drove company cars for a while and never had to pay for any damage. The marks left on the roof rails can e touched up with plastic enamel when you take the aerial off.
Another alternative is a rail mount, sometimes called balcony mounts. They go nicely on swing-out spare tyre mounts.
