This weekend I am going to start on a filtration system - at least start thinking about a design anyway. I have noticed the average price of DinoDiesel increase to £1.05 in places locally.

Has anyone got any references or photos of current setups? Any advice as to where to get common parts would also be useful. At the moment it is looking like screw-fix for pipes and fittings, a local industrial estate for 45 gall drums (?) but I am not too sure about filters yet. Oxfam for some old jeans to make some pre-filters.

What experience have you had with pipe diameters? 15mm would seem like a sensible minimum diameter.

Please donate any advice to this tread!

15 mm is a little tight , especially when its really cold , 22 or 35 is much better.

Two words GRAVITY and TIME works and is renewable and free.

Thinks GASCOLATOR .... ie defender fuel filter , concept not actually.

two top feeds with mass storage below, times as many barrels as you have , crap wvo in one end water drops out , skim off floaties, clean fuel ready to polish filter to 10 micron into reused containers.

hope this helps.

i get oil from indians down road, i leave it in the yard for a week for the whites to drop to the bottom then i siphon the top oil off into a 5micron bag filter hanging in the shed, filtered oil goes into a plastic bin, i then mix with 10% petrol to half the viscosity and pour it in the landy. the thick lard that gets left over gets saved into a 20litre drum and taken to the local recycling dump and disposed of for free. it takes about 1-2 hours to filter 20litres of the used oil, i do it cold to stop waxes disolving in oil.

Good advice there, it looks like keeping it simple is the way forward.

Any good?

Can be done much simpler but I wanted minimum effort and robustness...

How does that set up work and where did you get the filters from, Nat?

We get our filters and housings from Roger Debham at www.mearesolutions.co.uk. He's probably one of the cheapest around and the filters are excellent quality.

Have heard other wvo users say they filter theirs to 1 micron absolute, just to be on the safe side. Roger will be able to help and advise you, he knows his stuff. Wink

Second that, Roger is THE best!

Give him a ring, only about 2% of his stuff is on his site!

As for my setup...

It can be done simpler but I'm a bit lazy....

You need to let your fresh barrel of waste oil settle for at least 4-5 days, a lot of the crud settles to the bottom.

Tip as much of the clear stuff off the top into the first drum, then give it another few days to settle.

Then open the lowest tap and run off any crud till it comes clean.

Switch on the pump and it'll run through the filter housings and into the 2nd barrel, leave this to settle for another few days and then decent into drums ready for adding to your car.

Dead simple - As Terence says, Time and Gravity are the cheapest filters you can get.
