Folks,
Looking at purchasing a new motor. Spec has to be 4x4, capable of towing 3.5T (a trailered 90), and has to be high interior specification as it'll also be main family motor.
Have been looking at the merc ML as it fits the bill, but there seems to be minimal on the road and I don't know anyone with one.
Does anyone have any personal experience, anecdotal points or any comments on them? I realize they got a facelift a few years ago (2004) when they brought in the Gers to turn-around the poor canadian workmanship. Anyone any info on this? What was the poor workmanship that I've heard anecdotal noises about? The age I'm looking at is around 2001-2004ish.....
many thanks,
DD
ps, please, no need for the 'buy jap, buy X or Y' type posts.....

I'm surprised you've not seen many up here, there are a lot of them kicking about in Aberdeen.
They don't have a great reputation for reliability (very poor showing in JD Power) but having said that, a mate of mine had an ML320 for 3 years and never had a problem with it. I test drove one before ordering my E-class and it seemed pretty good, decent performance and handling and pretty comortable.
Suspension and brakes seem to be common faults and Merc labour rates are stratospheric.
Test drive one and see what you think!
Cheers
iain

Early diesel models were built in Graz Austria. Since facelift, all models are built in USA. Later models have a much better build quality.
Anyway, P3 forums full of useful info.

Better still, forget the ML, G's do everything better

go for post 99 model 270CDI, friend of mine as one thats done 84k without any fault, its comfy, nippy but very cheap inside, plastic bits fall off around the seats, glove box button falls off with more than usual use. You can pick them up for a song as the market is flooded with them. Leave the 320 petrol well alone, noisy and juicccccyyyyyyyyyy.

I have a 54 plate ML270 CDi and I love it. Yes I know its a Chelsea tractor, but I dont just use it for the school run.....it's, at present, stood in our farm yard caked in mud!
I've had over 10 different 4x4 and find it to be one of the comfiest, quietest drives. Had an 04 Disco and the Merc wins hands down over that.
If you are still umming and ahhing as to whether to get one, I would definitely recommend them.
