Rightyho, I parked the Mog last week and she was running fine, went to use her last night and she started (first time), until i took my finger off the starter button and she died. Tried a few more times and the same thing happened.

I'm thinking maybe a problem with the coil? Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers
iain

check the wiring conections in the ballast resister, thats he round thingy before the coil, it has an ignition feed live which is resisted to the coil, and also a starter button live permanent live only when button is pressed,
poss corroded wire maybe ?????

As Moggs said take a look at the ballast resistor.

When the ignition is on +24VDC runs through the ballast resistor and to the coil. However, when the starter is depressed +24VDC is routed directly to the coil. The point of this is to compensate for the low system voltage which will occur when the starter is cranking the motor over.

I'll try to attach a picture of the ballast resistor. If memory serves the top connector is potentially your issue. Of course your resistor could be bad, but they shouldn't fail unless some mechanical damage has occurred. You should get a few ohms across the resistor, mine typically reads 4-4.5 ohms.

Do you have the points or the Pertronix installed?

Rightyho, the resistor looks fine but I discoverd another problem.

My 404 doesn't have a key as such - when i got it, there was a scerwdriver sticking out of the ignition! Honesty, I didn't steal it...

Anyhow, said screwdriver now turns 360 degrees in the ignition. So I removed it, followed by a fair bit of sparking it must be said, and disconnected the batteries.

I've got a couple of spare ignition barrels but no keys so I was actually just contemplating putting a switch in it's place and maybe hiding another security switch somewhere to stop unwanted removal of the old girl.

The ignition's a ****** to get out though, looks like I'll have to take the volatge regulator out just to get at it.

Job for the weekend I think.

Ignition barrel swapped for the unit in my "spares" dashand she started first time. Wasn't actually that tricky - there was more slack in the cables than I thought at first glance and so i managed to pull it back on top of the voltage regulator to disconnect the terminals Very Happy

New problem though, she's dumped all the coolant. Seems to have sprung 6 leaks (in different places) all at the same time! How then **** can that happen? Mad

Anyway, used the mog for work for the first time, pulling my stuck shogun up a muddy 35 degree slope where it had been lodged (up to it's axles) for a few days. I've been taking down a lot of fencing so she's been used as an offroad workhorse for the weekend... About time too I reckon
