hi all
had a call from one of my old pals last night, " l have finished my latest buggy can l bring it up and give it a test round your track tomorrow" yep sure says I, didn't quite know what he was bringing till he arrived, l likey, in fact if l fitted in it l would be building one by now !
brief spec
suzuki axles
bonded ally tub
long travel suspension
no springs
1600cc enginebox midmounted
target weight 500 kg
[IMG]http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/andyhaycock/
aa12.jpg[/IMG]
l have a lot more info, and mark said he would email me the build photos if any one is interested ?
but for now a few pics as we all like pics don't we

oh and here's proof l don't fit in it!
must be something wrong with the seat as l couldn't even slide down into it, got jammed halfway down!!
which is a real shame as 1600cc engine propels 500kg with enough gusto to turn your eye balls back to front, but unfortunately all l could do was witness marks silly grin

hi nigel
here's a few more pics, this was the first time out so he didn't push it too hard, part of the track is really tight and twisty aimed at quads really, and will normally stop an sj unless you have diff locks both ends
but this has so much axle travel that it just crawled through at tick over
( diff locks not yet installed )
mark has over the years competed with offroad clubs and has built this to carry on doing so, l would like to be there when this is presented to the scrutineer for the first time, rules like diagonals from the roll hoop down to the chassis, may be difficult when there is no chassis!
as light as poss was the design idea, everything is riddled with holes or as light as it can be made, the tub was drawn up using cad, and the cut out by laser and folded up, then bonded and riveted making a strong but light weight Assembly, the engine/box are out of a Citroen
chosen because it is an alloy block head etc to keep the weight down
the diff in the gearbox was welded up after removing any gears that were not required, two props feed out of the saxo gear box too 2 sj axles double diffing in effect giving about 7 to 1 overall ratio, inside there are only 2 pedals accelerator and clutch ! brakes are 2 levers by your left hand pull both and all the brakes work or pull one to brake one side only
but it was built around mark and it fits like a glove, and try as l might l couldn't get my 6'6"" into it, l was going to put my lycra on and smear myself with Vaseline, but the others said they would leave if l did as they didn't want to be scarred for life !!!
l will get some build up pics and more accurate specs of mark

I'm liking it Andy!
All too often a build seems to be big/heavy/brutish but this is an interesting concept.
Like you say, wonder how the scrutineers are going to take it!!
Look forward to some more pics & info...
Nigel.

That is soooo different - I love it. I take it the engine is where the passnger seat should be. Must be as light as a feather. And soooo different - I love it! Did i already say that?

That is an an awesome 4x4. I'd love to see some more pic's of the build of it.
Looks like it's got some Fox air shoxs on it, but not sure of the travel, maybe 14"?
If it's powered by the Citroen Saxon VTS engine, then it'll have maybe 125bhp and if it weighs in at 500kg, then that'll be about 250bhp per tonne - which is more than Subaru Impressa
Looking really nice that - BUT WE NEED MORE PIC/INFO
Cheers
Shaun
ps need a name for it, how about Saxzuki?

Looks really good, well thought out and put together.
Massive project must have taken ages from having the idea originally to actually driving it.

hi all
l will be actively chasing mark for the build photos today, l am sure they will be worth waiting for
does it float ? don't know if theres a floor to the engine bay, if there is it would probably float away
the build was started in january and finished last week, 9 months pretty quick huh
kitesurf phill, you love it then?
alan: l thought that might get your attention, l will let you know when hes bringing it back as he wanted someone to drive it at speed so he could observe the suspension working from the outside, or don't you want to drive it as its left hand drive ?
lots of little details appear when you start to study it, like the brake pipes going to the rear drums, 2 each side ?
hand brake becomes a problem when you have 14" wheel travel, if you use a conventional hand brake lever and cable you have to have it so slack to avoid it pulling on when the wheel is fully up,down that it doesn't pull on the shoes when the lever is fully up.
so it has 2 wheel cylinders in each wheel, standard top cylinder for the main brakes and another where the bottom fulcrum used to be for the hand brake

That is VERY cool!
I do like it, has almost inspired me to start work on my lightweight project... almost
Mines nowhere near that level tho!
Although thats exactly how I wanted my wheelarches to be
What a really clever bit of kit!
Keep the photos coming!
Only question is, where are the recovery points?

Andy,
If you do post about the build, make a seperate thread altogether and ask everyone NOT to post in it until you've put everything into the thread so it doesn't become dis-jointed with everbody's posts.
Nat,
Recovery points, pffft
Nigel.

wanting recovery points must indicate that you are expecting to get stuck, pma is want you need, but just in case it runs out of petrol there is a hoop above the right front shock and a similar hoop on the "post" on the top of the rear axle
nigel
l will post a build up thread, just trying to get all the pics and info of him
cheers andy

Yeah I love trying to pick holes in stuff
If you're not getting stuck, you ain't trying hard enough!
Only reason why I mentioned recovery points is aren't they part of AWDC Scrutineering?

They look like 14" 2.0 Fox Airshox, available from Milners at £160 a corner.
Description: http://www.milneroffroad.com/20PRO.HTM
Pricelist: http://www.milneroffroad.com/FOXPRICE2.HTM
Baloo, could you find out what pressure the shocks are run at please?
Also, do you have any more photo's of the 812 and the other machine - a Priestman?

been thinking about the physics on this one ya know and one thing kinda sticks in my head
you say the tub is bonded ally and every thing bolts to that (no chassis) then do you not get any problems with the tub flexing when in use just to my way of thinking the tub would need to be braced its self

Looks braced around the top with the roll bar to suspension mounts etc.
The tub is under-slung really by the looks of it with only the drivers weight to hold?
Great design IMO. loving the lack of springs and the hp of the engine, had one of those vts's as a kid and it flew.
