right im after ideas how to strip the gearbox/t-case of the mog so i can run an auto on the original suspension any one heard of this being done or know of any websites i can get any ideas from
the plan is to strip all the gears out of the box and cut/machine the unused part of the box off then fix a plate or weld a plate over the opening and fitting an input shaft with a bearing carrier so i can fit that to any box/engine i want

as you can see its not just an unbolt job

Dude,

It has been done - and someone did run the gearbox off the output from an auto box.

Have a look at www.mogmsgexch.com which is a forum that works with the original (and best) mog mailing list. Have a search (there are tens of thousands of posts) and you may find something.

There's a fairly famous conversion some chap did cutting most of the gearbox away and welding it over, and just leaving the transfer bits. At one point there was a rumour he was going to sell them, but don't think it happened.

jim - this is all 404 stuff, but I think they're almost the same.

have you tried the pirate4x4 forum? They have done some ridiculous things with mog axles and gearboxes (but the lame b4st4rds always seem to pay someone to do it....)

minimog
did this progress any ?, l am thinking of buying a unimog, but it will come engine less, l am just pondering my options, l would like to fit a diesel and preferably an auto box, but the exsisting gearbox and transfer looks to be a stumbling block, do you know of what engines will bolt up to a 404 gear box or do you think it is likely that l would be able to make an adapter plate to fit a 300 tdi engine up to the mog box ? ( or is there conversion plates available already ? ( for any engine))
or perhaps the way to go would be to remove the torque tubes and fit an engine and auto box complete from another vehicle
views and ideas invited

not touched it ive been doing bits on the other mog Rolling Eyes
as for what fits what Confused
if your keeping it mog then keep the box because its the main part of the suspension and be easyer to make an engine fit than having to mess with links mounting and drivetrain parts
see moggs hes having a go at fitting a 6cly nisan lump
the main input shaft to the gear box it 30" long so this could be shortened and then make the tdi bell housing/clutch fit the box/shaft its all exsperiments at the mo so nothing defo
