Sounds like bits in the oil. Had a similar problem on mine without the whine and more clunky. Turned out to be worn and chipped teeth on the large cog.

Watch for rust on the front and rear arches, sills and rear seat belt mounts.

I have never had a problem with auto hubs so cant comment.

i had to change my bars when i got mine. They had lost there strength. Found i had to change the dampers too as they were on the way out aswell. something to bare in mind.
