I understand it takes around 2litres.
So I'd buy two 2litre bottles and two 500ml bottles, just to be sure.

Dot 5.1 is not hydroscopic, so once opened it won't absorb water.

I've read that in cold weather a 300tdi starter can draw 600amp current. A good starting point (pardon the pun) would be to look at the size of the current (sorry again) earth strap.

After cleaning up the earth points, add an​ earth strap direct from the starter motor to the battery. Heavy duty welding cables are a popular choice for an extra earth strap.

Check the earth strap from the starter motor. A dodgy earth strap might allow the minimal current from the solenoid but not the large current needed by the starter motor.

Sounds like the 1st/2nd synchro spring might have broken, or detent ball might have jammed, or as Xpajun says, the roll pin broken and causing the jam.

I'd run a short return pipe as though it's gone through the heater matrix.

If you want to add a heater matrix either in cab or next to rear rad at a later date just replace that short pipe.
