4×4 Insurance & Off-Road Insurance

Whether you’re using your four-wheel drive in town or country, chances are your running costs for the vehicle are higher than most standard cars, with higher road tax rates, a higher price to pay for a full tank of fuel, and increased costs for repairs. Thankfully, our 4×4 insurance customers saved an average of 27% in 2021 when taking out a policy with us.

What is 4×4 insurance?

Our 4×4 insurance is designed to cover multi-terrain vehicles. Whilst a regular car insurance policy might work for standard vehicles, 4x4s often need specialist insurance that cover them where regular policies do not, including for off roading and green laning. We can also cover non-standard 4x4s, such as imported or classic models.

Why choose Adrian Flux for 4WD insurance?

As a specialist insurance broker, we’re able to provide affordable 4WD insurance for all types of vehicles. Whether you own an ex-MOD Land Rover, an imported Pajero, a pick-up truck, a modified AWD, a Q-plated car, a kit 4×4, a classic off-roader, an SUV, or a luxury model, we can help.

Plus, green-laning and off-roading are included as standard on most policies.

How can I reduce the cost of my 4×4 insurance?

Our policies for most 4×4 drivers are already inexpensive, but you could save yourself even more money if you follow our simple tips.

Will you only drive a few thousand miles a year? Tell us so we can get you onto a limited mileage policy.

Keep your car garaged if you can, and install the best alarm system you can afford. This will help prevent your vehicle from being stolen or vandalised.

Modified pickup or off-roader? Make sure you tell us about all modifications, even if they don’t enhance performance. Some modifications might even reduce your premiums!

Are you in an owners club or online forum? If not consider joining one. There are several great clubs for all the main models, as well as more general off-roading sites. You could get an extra discount of up to 15%.

FAQs

Green laning are similar to normal roads in all ways except they’re unpaved. As a result, you need the minimal level of cover offered by your insurer to drive on green lanes. On the other hand, off-roading involves driving over rough terrain without any green lanes or roads.

Both activities carry their own risks, but for the most part, 4x4s are ideally suited to off-roading as all four wheels are powered. This means they can navigate rough terrain more easily.

Four-wheel drives tend to be in insurance groups on the higher end of the scale. This is because of their size, weight, and power.

As a result, you will generally have to pay higher insurance premiums to account for this. However, following the above steps or opting for a 4×4 in a lower insurance group can help you save money.

Yes, we offer 4×4 insurance for young drivers. If you’re 17 or 18 and have decided to buy a 4WD, we know that you’re enthusiastic about 4x4s, off-roading or green laning and therefore more likely to treat your vehicle with the care and attention it deserves. 4WDs are often found in higher insurance groups than most other cars as they are often more highly powered in order to perform on rougher off-road terrain. That being said, there are some 4x4s in low insurance groups, such as the Fiat Panda 4×4, which is found in groups between 7-10, or the Suzuki Jimni, which is found in insurance groups between 13-15. To compare, the Defender is often placed in insurance groups between 30-48.

The 4×4 you choose completely depends on your preferences and how you’ll use the vehicle. For instance, you might be more drawn to a classic 4×4 like the 1990s Land Rover Discovery, 1970s Suzuki Jimny, or a 1960s Toyota Land Cruiser. Alternatively, you might be more drawn to a modified Jeep Wrangle or a more modern 4×4.

Yes, you will still need insurance even if you only use your 4×4 occasionally. However, there are a couple of options available if you don’t use your vehicle all year around.

You might want to consider taking out short-term car insurance for your 4×4 and then laid-up or SORN car insurance when it’s not in use. You’ll need to SORN your 4×4 when it’s not being used if you do decide to go down this route.

Alternatively, let us know if you don’t use your vehicle often as we have limited mileage schemes available on annual policies. These are often more affordable than standard policies.

In most cases, you don’t need additional cover to tow another vehicle, trailer or caravan. However, if you’re towing another vehicle, you’ll need to ensure that the vehicle you’re towing has adequate insurance while it’s in transit.

If you’re towing a trailer or caravan, your 4×4 insurance will likely cover the trailer or caravan while it’s in transit and being towed. Make sure to check your policy to ensure you are covered for this eventuality. Even if you are, you might want to consider additional trailer or caravan insurance to cover your contents or any damage caused by a collision, which isn’t usually covered by your motor insurance.
